This image was done for the cover of Raw City #1. The comic was published by London Night Studios. I wasn’t very familiar with the characters, but from what I could tell it was an action comic with lots of cool Sci-Fi stuff. I was given the okay to put my own spin on the costumes which made the assignment that much more fun to do. The speckled effect in the background was done by masking off the figures and using a toothbrush to splatter the ink. Overall I was very happy with the final art. Looking back on it now, I think the rifle that one of the girls is holding looks a bit more like a Super Soaker than a ray gun, but I guess that’s okay in Sci-Fi images.

Look closely at the costume Luxura is wearing and you will see that it is based on the spectacular design on the cover of the original comic by Dave Cockrum.

Dark Horse recently published a John Carter, Warlord of Mars Omnibus that reprints the series in black & white and is absolutely awesome!

I recently saw the John Carter movie and it was amazingly cool to Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas and John Carter come to life. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie but I must admit that I am a bit biased.

Reviews on the movie are mixed but for me it was a real treat to see Barsoom brought to life on the big screen.

When I was creating the character of Luxura one of the things that I wanted to do was change her costumes from time to time. Much the same way the character of Dejah Thoris did not always have on the same clothes. It’s one of my pet peeves about female comic characters. I can understand super heroines who are part of a team like say, the X-men and they wear a regular uniform. But characters like Luxura, Lady Death or Wasp seem more believable to me because they change their looks from time to time.

This was very early in my comic career when I was Editor in Chief for Spoof and Personality comics.

Things were always hectic due to the fact that we were publishing upwards of 10 comics per month. I asked Adam if he could get the cover art to me a little sooner and due to his work load for the big companies it just wasn’t possible. He completed the pencils and gave me to go ahead to ink it. I was exceptionally careful and did every thing I could to nail the lines and softness that is Adam’s trade mark for his images.

For the coloring, I used a technique called “Blue Line”. It’s when you get a reproduction of the line art burned onto the illustration board and then create a film overlay. The result is that you can color on the illustration board and preserve the line art from being colored directly. This was back in the early 90′s and now with digital coloring this technique is no longer in use as far as I know.

This was fun to do and was a great chance to work with one of my all time favorite artists.

This is the Cover art to Vampire Bites #1. This was one of the first times that I showed Luxura in a different outfit. One of the things that I made sure I did with Luxura was to change her costumes from time to time. The notion of a female character that wears the same clothes all the time just didn’t make sense to me. I also wanted to make sure that Luxura could be identified no matter what she is wearing.

I didn’t continue this series because it was just too redundant. There was already a Vamperotica monthly anthology and I ultimately decided not to publish too many of the same type of books. As a small publisher I always kept in the back of my mind that it was better to do fewer books with better quality than to do several books just for the sake of expanding the company. The hair alone on this image took me a full day and a half to complete. The patterns may seem random but I had my own method for exactly what types of lines that I drew and inked in each section.

The line art for this cover was done with a Windsor Newton Series 7 #3 Brush which I modified with an Exato knife.

It took me about three full days start to finish. This was one of the first spin off titles of Luxura from the original Vamperotica comic series. The original art is around 11×17 on smooth bristol and was done with a B- lead mechanical pencil, Pigma Micron pens and Windsor Newton Series 7 sable brushes. I used sizes 1 to 3.

The main purpose of this series was to give readers a look at Luxura’s past adventures. The original Vamperotica series was geared around my Red Reign story line but there was much more about Luxura as a character that I wanted to begin to develop. This title was published right around the same time as Vampress Luxura #1 and was one of the best sellers.

This cover image was also the inspiration that sculpter Shawn Nagel used to create the original Vampress Luxura Statue.
